2016 Porsche 918 Spyder Price And Specs

The 918 Spyder is one of the most impressive cars Porsche ever made and it certainly is one of the three fastest cars in the World today. The 2016 Porsche 918 Spyder is the last model to be sold by the German manufacturer as part of the two year run of the original car which has been first released back in 2013 and offered to the public in the mid of 2014. The drawback for us is that Porsche already sold all cars and the 918 Spyder can not be bought new anymore. Instead, there are a few dealers out there who still have a car with little to no mileage but that car will cost a lot more than the original asking price of around $850,000

This is because Porsche only built 918 cars, 2 of which are developing prototypes and one of them is actually reserved to go into the Porsche museum. The car has been first shown back in 2010 at the Geneva Auto Show and back then many people thought that it was just a design exercise. Even when it was officially launched, the 918 Spyder was thought to be inferior to its main rivals, the Ferrari LaFerrari and the McLaren P1. This is because it is much heavier than the other two and it does not have as much power as them.

However, the 2016 Porsche 918 Spyder and the earlier models managed to impress everyone when the car proved to be the fastest production car to reach 60 MPH from a standing start. This was mostly thanks to its powertrain which is something quite special.

2016 Porsche 918 Spyder Engine

The engine is a 4.6 liter naturally aspirated flat-crank V8 which has been developed from the Le Mans engine Porsche used a few years ago. The engine is capable of delivering up to 608 horsepower and 389 lb-ft of torque. Coming to its aid there are two electric motors, one in the front and one at the back. These add an extra of 279 horsepower and more than 600 lb-ft of torque. The end result is that the 918 Spyder can provide in any given moment up to 887 horsepower and 940 lb-ft of torque. The petrol engine sends all of its power to the rear via a 7 speed PDK gearbox and thanks to the fact it does uses dual-clutches, it can accelerate from 0 to 60 MPH in just 2.2 seconds while its top speed has been tested to be 218 MPH. The car can also run in a fully electric mode for up to 12 miles which is equally impressive.

Exterior Design

The design of the production model is quite similar to that of the original prototype released nearly five years ago and so is the 2016 Porsche 918 Spyder which does not come with any real changes on the exterior. However, the car does come with an optional Weissach package which removes nearly 80 pounds of weight. This makes the car more capable on the track and it should reduce the 0 to 60 MPH slightly.

Interior

The interior on the other hand remains unchanged which is to be expected considering this is a limited series. The steering wheel is quite simple, especially when compared to those of its competitors. The steering wheel is similar to other production Porsche cars but the center console is a sleek aluminum piece which houses most of the controls for the satellite navigation, climate control and audio system. Inside the cabin there are only two types of materials, aluminum and leather. These gives the driver the sense of quality and it makes the car seem quite sensible despite the fact of being an all out hyper-car.
