2016 Ferrari 488 GTS

Ferrari has just blown the lid on the supercar market with a red rocket it calls the 488 GTB. Some may see it is only an update to the 458 Italia, but since the vee-8 lump is a turbocharged one that pushes 670 PS, it's actually a monster capable of playing with older V12 models.

Sculpted by Ferrari's own people, the 488 GTB is a stunner, an evolution of its predecessor that evokes the classic 308 GTB using a large air intake scallop. The convertible version is sure to follow within the year and might revive a very nostalgic name – GTS. In 1977, the Italian company introduced a targa version of the 308 called GTS and we think it's a perfect match for our recently discovered renderings.

That's why we think the successor to the 458 Spider should be called 488 GTS. The styling will be largely the same with the exception of the flip-up single piece roof that will be carried over. And if imagination doesn't serve you, than this rendering created by X-Tomi Design should do the job just fine. Especially in this yellow color, the Italian stallion looks like it would shame the Huracan and McLaren 650S in a heartbeat, putting Ferrari back where it belongs at the top of the supercar totem.

Power for the 488 GTS should also come from a 3.9-liter twin-turbo, which, Ferrari claims, is a new engine even though the displacement is the same as on the California T. With just as much power as a Lamborghini Murcielago LP 670–4 SuperVeloce, 0 to 100 km/h sprits should take only a tick over 3 seconds.

And all of this will, ironically, arrive in a package that Ferrari says is more manageable than ever. Thanks to clever software systems, variable torque management and side-slip angle control system, the 488 GTS will be less prone to crashing, which let's face it is a real problem for Ferrari owners.

To end this story, here's a fun little fact for you. There were 12,004 308s produced from 1975 to 1985, making this a high-volume supercar. But we think total production of the 458 and 488 will be at least 20,000. In fact, the total Ferrari production capacity for 1.5 years is the same as the 308 managed in a full decade.
